The University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus, celebrating 60 years of existence, has been ranked among the top tier of global universities according to the most respected university ranking agency, Times Higher Education.

Addressing the Founder’s Day Ceremony at the 3Ws Pavillion, Cave Hill Campus, on Thursday, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Clive Landis said UWI was ranked the number one university in the Caribbean and among the top 100 global universities.

“Across seven faculties, the Cave Hill Campus has graduated over 43 000 students since the intrepid founding cohort of 112 students. Next week, we will have the graduation ceremony for another 1 500-plus students. The cycle continues, as does the stature and reputation of the university.

“I have absolutely no doubt that through our outstanding graduates and research, this campus will build on the first 60 years of continually established traditions of excellence and engagement in society to help drive Caribbean development for the next 60 years,” he said.

During the ceremony hosted by the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus 60th Anniversary Committee in collaboration with the UWI Alumni Association (Barbados) Chapter, Professor Landis announced that the Cave Hill Campus will be launching a new database called Impact Cave Hill in early December.

He explained that it will be a living database which would allow members of the public to explore the impact the campus was having at multiple levels – nationally, regionally and internationally.

“This initiative is aligned with the overarching five-year strategy of the Cave Hill Campus theme, Creating Values from our Ideas, as we seek to leverage our research capacity to convert ideas to value for society, but also creating value for the university itself. Impact Cave Hill will, therefore, feed into the campus’ strategy by illustrating how members of the campus community are active in society and then by creating value in society,” Professor Landis said.

Colleagues, founders, members of the Cave Hill Campus community, supporters and friends attended the Founders’ Day ceremony.

Professor Alan Cobley said even though many of the campus’ founders were unable to attend the ceremony due to illness or death, their contribution must be recognised and applauded. (AH)
