Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Dale Marshall announced on Saturday that the Government was committed to the establishment of a new military facility. Addressing the Passing-Out Parade of the BDF’s Recruit Training Course 1/2023 at the Garrison, Marshall said the new facility would not only increase the Force’s capabilities but also create additional career opportunities for young men and women who harbour a deep sense of patriotism and wish to serve their country. “The battle against climate change cannot be fought alone. International collaboration and support are vital in tackling these security risks effectively. We must stand together with our global allies, working hand in hand to mitigate the impacts of climate change and protect our shared future. “These new threats demand further investment in our people and the physical plant. The demands placed on the Force oftentimes outstrip their resources, both human and material. From where I sit as a member of the Defence Board, it is critical that there is some further investment in the Force so that you can meet the increasing demands,” Marshall said. Mottley made the disclosure as she spoke to members of the media about tourism development in Bridgetown during a tour of the Wyndham Grand Barbados Sam Lord’s Castle Resort. “We will keep the historic aspect of the Drill Hall and St Ann’s Fort there, but the truth is that it is not practical for the Barbados Defence Force to be there, and it is more amenable to tourism development,” Mottley said. Noting that the Government’s commitment to bolstering the military may generate excitement, Marshall stressed that the contribution of a new facility and career paths will shape the destiny of the nation. Meanwhile, the Attorney General urged the new members of the BDF to stand tall and proud of their achievements and to spur themselves to greater heights not just in national service but throughout their lives. “As military professionals, you embody the values of service, honour, and sacrifice. Your duty is not only to defend our nation’s borders but also to safeguard its future. You are guardians of our sovereignty, entrusted with protecting our people, our resources, and our way of life. The Barbados Defence Force in all its diverse elements has been a stabilising developmental and educational power within the Barbados, regional and international communities,” he said. Staff Advisor to the Chief of Staff, Cdr Mark Peterson, said that while the newest additions to the BDF have demonstrated exceptional courage, discipline and resilience throughout their training, the skilled instructors, officers and dedicated personnel who have invested their time and expertise during the 16 weeks of training must also be applauded for their contribution. “We must also acknowledge the unwavering support of your loved ones, the families and friends who have stood by your side, offering encouragement and understanding during the challenging moments. This ceremony is a testimony to their patience, love, and unrelenting belief in your abilities, so do not disappoint them,” the Staff Advisor said. Dignitaries, especially invited guests, relatives and friends who attended the proceedings, got to see the sharply dressed military personnel showcasing a piece of what they learned through the training sessions. The Best Recruit trophy was awarded to Shaedon Padmore.
