Clarke replaces Lashley in St Philip North as DLP names six new candidates

The Opposition Democratic Labour Party (DLP) confirmed on Sunday that longtime member Michael Lashley will not contest the St Philip North constituency in the next general election.

At a branch meeting held at the Alexandra School in St Peter, the DLP named attorney-at-law Simon Clarke—a Bayfield native and newcomer to the political ring—as its candidate for the seat.

Clarke was one of six additional candidates added to the party’s slate for the upcoming election, which is constitutionally due in 2027.

These new political hopefuls join the 15 candidates previously announced in January. They are: Jason Phillips (St Peter), Paul Gibson (St James Central), David Walrond (St George North), Malissa Howard (Christ Church West Central), Ensley Grainger (St Michael East) and Simon Clarke (St Philip North).

DLP President Senator Andre Worrell told the gathering, “This shows that the Democratic Labour Party is serious, and we are hearing and acknowledging the call of the people of Barbados.”

The party also officially introduced Felicia Dujon as its candidate for the St James North by-election, slated for May 21.

Worrell praised Dujon for her consistent advocacy in education and youth welfare.

“She does not wait – as long as there is an issue, especially an issue affecting the children and the people of Barbados, as the spokesperson on education she champions the cause and she represents our children,” he told party supporters.

He urged voters in St James North to rally behind Dujon and “fire a warning shot across the bow of the Barbados Labour Party.” (LG)
