Hundreds of workers employed by C.O. Williams Construction are off the job following a breakdown in salary negotiations.Deputy General Secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU), Dwaine Paul, confirmed that the dispute has been reported to the Chief Labour Officer and the union is awaiting word on the way forward. He said no workers will be working until they are advised by the Chief Labour Officer, noting that the employees are upset about the stalled talks over a proposed wage increase.
He added that the ongoing challenges in the construction sector highlight the need for wider engagement among industry stakeholders. Pauls also said there needs to be a national discussion with workers across the island on the issues in the construction industry, adding that a meeting will be organised as early as next week.
