The National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) will use this year’s Public Workers’ Week to review its performance, present financial reports, and set priorities for the year ahead when members gather from March 21.

NUPW general secretary Richard Greene said: “On [Saturday] 21st is the conference’s business session where the union will present its financial report, its annual report, and follow up on decisions from the previous conference, and obviously make plans and give the general secretary instructions on the way forward for the union.”

The conference will form part of the annual Public Workers’ Week, which runs from Sunday March 15, featuring a series of activities beginning with a religious service at the St Lucy Parish Church.

Later on that Sunday, public workers are to gather at Farley Hill National Park for a picnic.

On Monday March 16, attention will turn to a health fair organised by the NUPW’s insurance subsidiary, NUPW Insurance Inc., followed by a road tour of government departments spearheaded by the union’s youth league.

“It is like a departmental crawl, where they will be going by bus to visit different departments throughout the public service to create some awareness, and to encourage young public officers to join the union by giving them information and letting them know of the work that they do as young public officers on the behalf of workers in the public service,” explained Greene.

The NUPW’s annual conference will officially open on Thursday March 19 with the next day featuring the renaming of one of the recreational sites at the union’s Dalkeith Road headquarters after stalwart Roy Greenidge.

Greene said: “He would have made significant contributions to the union in matters of social interactions and recreation. After that, there will be karaoke and lime where people will get together and socialise.”

He continued: “We are encouraging persons to participate, and take advantage of the opportunities for greater social interaction and engagement with the union, so we can create that awareness around the work of the union.”
