The Guild of Students of the University of the West Indies was summoned to an urgent meeting with the Campus Registrar following mounting student frustrations over a crippled shuttle service and other security concerns affecting students.

โ€‹The meeting, which included the Guild President, Vice President, and the Registrar, was called to address the breakdown in transport logistics that has left much of the student body stranded. During the briefing, the Registrar revealed that one shuttle is currently being โ€œactively worked onโ€ due to a clutch issue and should return to service by Tuesday..

โ€‹Furthermore, the Registrar noted that two other shuttles were referred to the licensing authority for inspection. While they passed as of Monday afternoon, administrative hurdles remain.ย

The Registrar stated that โ€œcertificates are to be collected on the 24th of March to bring to the insurance company,โ€ and if the shuttles are not back Tuesday, they โ€œshould be back on the road by Wednesday morning.โ€

โ€‹The meeting also highlighted a significant rift in how the administration views student transport. The Guild leadership, known as the Council, reportedly pushed back against the administrationโ€™s stance on the necessity of the fleet.ย

A spokesperson for the Guild noted that โ€œthe Council would have communicated to the Registrar that we did not agree with the notion that the shuttle was supplementaryโ€.

โ€‹In response to the Guildโ€™s pressure, the Registrar has reportedly shifted his stance, indicating that โ€œmoving forward, any disruption in the shuttle service would warrant a great sense of urgency.โ€

โ€‹Despite these assurances, the Guild of Students is maintaining a hard line. An update has been promised to the student leadership by Wednesday afternoon, and the Council has made its intentions clear should that deadline be missed.

ย โ€œThe Guild of Students remains committed to actively resolving the matter,โ€ the Council stated, adding that โ€œif the promised deadline for communication is not met, the Council will not hesitate to take further actionโ€.
