Sir Garfield Sobers (1936-2026) Friends of Democracy pays tribute

Friends of Democracy has hailed The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers as a defining figure in Barbados’ global identity, as tributes continue to pour in following the death of the National Hero last Friday, days before his 90th birthday.

In an official statement, FOD general secretary Steve Blackett expressed the profound sense of loss felt across the island and the region.

“Barbados, the Caribbean, and the cricketing world mourn the passing of one of the greatest sportsmen ever to grace the game. Sir Garfield Sobers was far more than a legendary cricketer. He was an ambassador for Barbados, a symbol of excellence, humility, determination, and national pride. His achievements placed our small island on the world stage and inspired millions across generations.”

Reflecting on Sir Garfield’s unmatched athletic career, Blackett highlighted the milestones that cemented his status globally.

“At just 21 years of age, Sir Garfield produced one of the greatest innings in cricket history, scoring an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan—a world record that stood for 36 years,” he noted. “He also became the first player in first-class cricket to hit six sixes in a single over, a remarkable achievement that remains one of the sport’s most iconic moments.”

The former social care minister in the 2013-2018 DLP administration also noted that Sir Garfield’s talents extended beyond the cricket pitch, including his achievements as an accomplished golfer representing Barbados and his tenure with Nottinghamshire in England’s County Championship.

“His excellence was not confined to cricket alone,” Blackett stated. “Today, we celebrate a life that changed the game forever and honour a man whose legacy will never fade.”

In recognition of his contributions, Sir Garfield was named a National Hero of Barbados in 1998. His legacy continues through the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, the International Cricket Council’s highest individual honour, awarded annually to the Men’s Cricketer of the Year.

“The Friends of Democracy extend our deepest condolences to Sir Garry’s family, friends, former teammates, and to all Barbadians during this time of national mourning,” Blackett added. “May The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers rest in eternal peace.”
