The motorcade travelled from Pelican Village to Golden Square, where senior athletes, dancers and supporters gathered for the opening ceremony shortly after midday. Speaking at the event, deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Mark Franklin highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for the islandโs growing senior population. โThere was a census done in 2021, and after that census, it was said that 60 per cent of all Barbadians are over the age of 35,โ Franklin said. He noted projections that by 2050, half of the population could be over the age of 65. โWe have not only an ageing population, but weโre having a super-aged society,โ he added. โWhat we have to do is create those conditions that will make our seniors comfortable and encourage healthy and active ageing.โ Franklin urged older Barbadians to take part in the month-long programme of activities, which is designed to promote wellness, exercise and social engagement among seniors.
