Repeat offender jailed for supermarket theft

Last year, Troy Ryan Oneal Jordan appeared before Magistrate Manila Renee and received an 18-month sentence for theft.

On Monday, the 59-year-old from Vauxhall, Christ Church, was again given an 18-month sentence when he was brought before the District ‘A’ Magistrates Court No. 2 and admitted to stealing a ham worth $104.78, a $12.45 perfume, and two deodorants valued at $23.85 each from BJ’s Value Market on August 22.

“You are not learning. You were last here just last year and I gave you 18 months for something similar and you just got out of prison and back here again,” the magistrate said.

Prosecutor Sergeant Kenmore Phillips told the court that last Saturday, around 9:30 a.m., Jordan walked into the store at Spooner’s Hill, went to the ham freezers and placed one in his backpack. The security officer on duty, who recognized him, watched closely. The guard moved to the front of the store and stopped Jordan after he passed the cashiers and headed for the exit. When they searched his backpack, they found the stolen items.

“I was stealing them but when I get to the front I tell myself, ‘Ya see this here? This is foolishness that I doing,’ and I was going to put dem back but I get hold before I could,” Jordan told the court.

Pointing out that the majority of his 39 previous convictions fell under the Theft Act, Magistrate Manila Renee said, “You pleaded guilty at the earliest possible time and did not waste the court’s time and therefore I will give you 18 months even though you should be getting more time because as soon you got out you are back in trouble.”
