Man remanded on theft charge

A Sargeants Village man, who said his past had made him a target, was remanded after denying that he stole a handbag and more than $2 000 in contents.

“My name get put up because I have a past and I get targeted,” Shane Daniel Jeremiah Polin said in the District ‘A’ Traffic Court.

The 41-year-old general worker of Bartletts Tenantry pleaded not guilty to stealing a $200 handbag, cell phone, purse, cosmetic bag, identification and bank cards, cash, and other items totalling $2 350, belonging to Roseanne Grace, on September 4.

PC Troy Tudor objected to Polin’s release, pointing to the accused’s 35 previous convictions, most of which were under the Theft Act.

The prosecutor also cited the strength of the evidence and the seriousness of the offence.

Acknowledging his history, Polin told the court he was employed but currently on sick leave because of an injury.

He said: “I was working and my foot get hurt and I have been home for the past two weeks, on bed rest, because my foot swollen. They say they have camera footage but if the person running, I can’t run with this foot.”

Polin also noted that it had been “a while” since he had been before the courts.

But Magistrate Richards remanded him into custody until next month.

“I will err on the side of caution and hold you for a little bit. I will tell the prosecution that if the evidence is so strong, I will expect the file to come fast,” the magistrate said.

The case will continue on October 14.
