A 26-year-old man who is facing several charges including entering the Bridgetown Port in a wanton manner, is now on remand at Her Majesty’s Prison Dodds.
Rashad Akeem Mathurin, from Bibby’s Gap, Hall’s Road, St Michael appeared before Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes on Monday and was sent to the St Philip institution for 28 days after Sergeant Victoria Taitt put forward objections to bail. He is expected to make his next appearance before the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on November 24.
Mathurin is accused that on August 24 he unlawfully entered the premises of the Barbados Port Inc, in a wanton manner. It is also alleged that on the same day, not being at his place of abode had with him articles for use in connection with theft namely, a ratchet, a wire cutter, ten sockets and an extension bar.
The general worker is further charged with possession of cannabis, possession with intent to supply and trafficking in the illegal substance and also, that he knowingly handled cannabis which was intended by him or some other person to supply.
The accused pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Taitt, objected to bail based on the serious nature of the offences and the location where one of the offences allegedly occurred. She also pointed to the strength of the evidence and the fact that he was already on bail from two other courts.
Chief Justice Weekes ruled against bail after considering Taitt’s submissions and those from Mathurin’s attorney-at-law Shadia Simpson.
