Guyana Jaguars defeated Barbados Pride by six wickets to win their third-round encounter in the Cricket West Indies Regional Four-Day Championships at Kensington Oval today.

Chasing 45 to win in 16 overs, the defending champions scored 48 for four wickets in 8.3 overs. The not out batsmen were Leon Johnson on 11 and Raymon Reifer who ended the match with a six off left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, on 10.

Guyana might have lost four wickets in pursuit of the modest target but the outcome of the game was never in doubt.

The Jaguars were set the modest target after the Pride were dismissed for 232 in 74 overs. Barbados Pride were floundering at 97 for four in the first over after lunch still needing 91 runs to erase the deficit of 188 runs. Roston Chase and Shane Dowrich shared a vital fifth-wicket partnership of 107 on a pitch that was keeping low to give the home team hope of drawing the game.

Shane Dowrich completed a second half-century in the match but his overall efforts were in vain.

Shane Dowrich completed a second half-century in the match but his overall efforts were in vain.

Despite the uneven bounce in the pitch, Dowrich was at his attacking best flashing the ball to various parts of the field. He struck three consecutive boundaries and raced to his half-century from just 51 balls. Chase who was dropped by Leon Johnson at first slip after he had scored 18  reached his 50 in 134 minutes off 104 balls.

They took the score to 204 when Dowrich cut at a ball which was too close to him from left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul and was caught by wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble for 65. He batted for 121 minutes, faced 86 balls and stroked 12 fours.

He was dismissed with the score on 204 for the loss of five wickets. After his dismissal, the rest of the Pride’s batsmen quickly imploded losing their last five wickets for 20 runs.

Permaul quickly wrapped up the innings with four wickets for 73 runs from 25 overs and was supported by left-arm seamer Raymon Reifer who took three wickets for 53 runs from 23 overs

Earlier, the Jaguars enforced the follow-on after their hosts were dismissed for 360 on Sunday just before the close of play in reply to the Jaguars’ team total of 548 all out.

Kraigg Brathwaite and  Shayne Moseley started the day against the pace of Reifer and Clinton Pestano on a pitch that was keeping low. Brathwaite’s stay at the crease was brief, he pushed forward to a ball that pitched outside off from Reifer and was caught at the wicket by Bramble for four making the score 5 for one after 1.5 overs

Captain Shamarh Brooks and Moseley carefully repaired the damage, they added 64 runs before Moseley who batted solidly for 32 runs had his stumps unrooted by a ball that also kept low from Pestano.

The Jaguars increased the pressure on the Pride with the wicket of Jonathan Carter. They bowled into the body of the left-handed batsman, Romario Shepherd who replaced Reifer at the Joel Garner end and had Carter caught by Bramble for six. The Pride had wobbled to 73 for three.

And it simply got worse for the home side from there.
