The St Nicholas Abbey Heritage Railway tours got off to a spectacular start this morning, when the fully booked three-carriage train, Badger, took to the track for the first time in Barbados.
With close to 100 people aboard, the first train ride left the starting point at St Nicholas Abbey and went on a journey of almost two miles, passing through a limestone path down the scenic Cherry Tree Hill and back.
During the approximately 45 minutes journey, tourists and locals had the opportunity to learn more about the rich history of the area.

Co-owner of St Nicholas Abbey Simon Warren told Barbados TODAY he was pleased with the response.
“It went very well. We were fully booked, it went very well,” he said.
“People were enjoying it. They said that they were glad we now have a train in Barbados again. The people were very, very happy,” said Warren.
Officials are hoping the new attraction will provide a major boost to the island’s heritage tourism product.
Currently, the locomotive train, which will operate six days a week, from Sunday to Friday, consists of three carriages, holding up to 32 passengers each. (MM)

Sarah McGuinness
Great attraction but no price listed for train ride. I am going there with a couple of my buddies real soon.
It will be nice if we can purchase tickets on line to avoid standing in Line and for sure you will get your money in advance.
Brilliant idea, I have on many occasions viewed photographs of early Barbados and have always been fascinated with scenes of the train and its station at Bathsheba and the remnants of the tracks which are still visible today along the coastline of Consett bay in the parish of Saint John. This is something to look forward to and I believe it will add value to the tourism sector which was waning with its attractiveness due to the same old places of interest.
So nobody criticizing what they always refer to as the “buy-and-sell” private sector that only rip-off Black Bajans.
Seems like everyone is praising the White man for literally looking to turn the engines of economy with this investment and addition to the tourism product. While no one will leave their country to come to Barbados just because of this new attraction, it will certainly diversify the offerings to select from while on the island.
This railway tour reminds me somewhat of the train ride along the banks of Connecticut River with dinner, music, and commentary on the historic trading link between New York and parts of New England.
This writer can envision the railway concept being replicated at the recently renovated Sunbury House, along the old train line from Carrington Factory to Bushy Park in St. Philip. It would be a welcomed addition to interpret the old train system, the sugar and rum industries, and the important role slavery played in sugar cane cultivation and harvest. This train would be a hit for visitors and locals, particularly school children.
Maybe the so-called guardians of the “poor Black man” can now tell us what are their plans for investing significantly in the local economy. And please do not tell me shooting up the place and at the police.
Great addition to Barbados’s tourism package. One of the days we will see casinos in the mix also. The world is not perfect.
See you in may
the more things change the more they remain the same
Run that thing up and down the coast road and get some of those smelly busses and cars off the road.
@NB, great idea, please invest some of the FUNDS you have in that project. For sure you will be laughing all the way to the Bank in a hurry.
Something is telling me whose idea it is.
@Alex – Tell me, what r u hoping to get from ur visit?
@Alison Archer-What on earth do u mean?
@CH, The Black Man/Woman in Barbados has sold their economic base,……..Their LAND. First mistake that will haunt us till the end of time. Then they do not recognize their spending power.
@Jenny, For years I always wanted to visit every Caribbean Island but was/is unable to do so due to LIAT inflated prices. I know for sure I do have “FAMILY” spread across the Islands according to most of my Family members History.
@Alex – OK. Thought u was wanting a similar experience to DAT of liverpool.
Black people will not invest in any project due to their assimilation. Black people was assimilated to prop up ALL the other races, and kick down
each other hence
horse racing, rally car racing, Xmas, cruising , biggest motor car and generalised consuming. Forget disenfranchisement which is not even a glitch in that mind of theirs. And as for
affirmative action
well lest just say a resounding no to DAT one.
driving,
@Alex- forget the land. They probably did not know what to do with it anyway. The have sold their soul and minds too, For bones and political BS. An island they do not even own or control.
Now this idea is a good one, let’s face it, but the brains aka government heads paying some consultants mega dollars and cannot even come up with some thing half this idea. Every entity literally in the doldrums, sailing on the backs of the few and the biggest of heads cannot ser the main problem. People just collecting sirtificates which limit and stagnate their ability to think while clouding their eyes and disabling them from thinking outside the box.
My ancestors created the cotton gin, microphone, fridge, stoplights, motor car, hair straighteners, dress, light bulb,
viaducts, conduits etc. Mind u they did not have one single sirtificate making think and innovate to live. Now we got pigeonholing, certificates etc causing much limitations and u people dim as a rock and can’t see the error of ur ways.
Maybe ilaro court can be used as a haunted house.
I hear they got a couple of spirits already running around in dey.
When the WI Test team rule the World wiping out the opposition in 3 days, I wrote that a Plant should be set up in the Caribbean making Cricket Gear so that we won’t have to import from Shirts down to jack straps. To this day nothing has been done. Have any of you see the cost of a cricket bat here in BIM.
@Jen, I also took a trip over to Cape Town SA and they wanted me to PAY to go see the Jail that housed NELSON MANDELA , I said NO the Joint need to be Bulldozed to ground Zero. Anytime you see me in a Jail House it is because I am being arrested.
Over the years Black people in Barbados have been fleeced, not just by outsides, but by their very own. Trade Confirmers,BCCI, Clico, the Commercial banks in Bridgetown and even the last Government. Like the story of the Talent in the good book ,Bajans now prefer to hold on to the one talent they each possess, less someone comes along and 3-card brag it out of their hands.
