Barbadian free skier Victor White has clinched second place in the Europa Cup in Poland over the weekend.
An elated White shared on his Instagram Page @victorwhite3 that he was sitting in first place after his second run but was beaten by 0.33 points which left him in second place thereby taking the silver medal in the Europa Cup.
The response since White placed second has been overwhelming with many Barbadians taking to Instagram and Facebook to congratulate White on his achievement. White was the lone Barbadian to represent the island in the Europa Cup.
The twenty-two-year-old professional skier received his second place award draped in the Barbados National Flag. White told Barbados TODAY in an earlier interview that he decided to represent Barbados due to his father being Barbadian and who passed away in 2014.
“My dad passed away from cancer in 2014 but he was very proud of what I was doing and a big part of me representing Barbados is to honour him as we started this journey together. Unfortunately, he did not get to see me compete internationally at the highest level,” he said then.
White’s next goal is to qualify for the Winter Olympics in 2020. If successful he would make history as he would be the first Barbadian athlete to compete in those Games.
The confirmation of White’s achievement came from Minister of Creative Economy, Culture and Sports John King who shared White’s success on his Facebook page over the weekend.
His comments read: “Breaking news our very own Barbados free-skiing athlete Victor White just came 2nd in Poland at the Europa Cup. I am exceedingly proud of this achievement,” his post read.
