Liar gets bail

Parish Land, Christ Church, resident Gary O’Brian Chanlder has been advised to stop telling lies after he issued an apology to a Bridgetown magistrate today.

The 25-year-old appeared before Magistrate Douglas Frederick last month charged with unlawfully wounding Constable Rommel Downes on February 7 and entering Norma Howell’s house as a trespasser and making off with a $150 pair of shoes.

He was not required to plead to the first charge and he denied the second one.

At that time Chandler, who has a piece of steel protruding from the top of his left arm almost down to the elbow, with the arm heavily bandaged and in a sling, told the magistrate that he was shot and had to go to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

In that bail application, he also said he should be allowed to go home as “my grandmother on she dying bed and I don’t want to put her through that”.

However, it was later proved by his sibling that he was not being truthful about his grandmother’s health.

“I am totally sorry about that Sir,” Chandler told Frederick today adding, “I asking for bail under any and all conditions. I get to reflect about that in prison . . . the hand turning dark and still swell.”

Frederick then explained that he was willing to grant him bail on his first appearance due to his condition “but you told so many lies and your sister came and put a spoke in your wheel”.

The accused will reappear in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on August 12 after he was granted $3,000 bail with one surety.

“Learn not to tell lies,” Frederick told Chandler as he walked out of the dock.
