Though Crop Over festivities have been cancelled, music lovers still had the opportunity to get a taste of some new releases when the latest edition of the Soca Lockdown was staged on Saturday night. The live concert series, which is the brainchild of songstress Faith Callender, is focused on breaking the monotony of remaining at home during the curfew hours.

Among those who teased their fans with new material in the Bashment Edition were Scrillla and Walkes. Always known for his witty lyrics, Scrilla’s new song Freak is no different.

His fast-paced set included the hits Drop De Bumpa, Playing With My Head and Wood, with Callender chiming in as backup. Walkes’ aptly named Quarantine Time got a good response from the audience as they rewarded him with numerous fire emojis.

He got viewers amped up with I Waan Meet Meat, Arch and Bend and Hickles of Life. He stepped out of the bashment vein with his popular song Champions of Colour, which earned him a spot in the semi-finals of the International Soca Monarch competition earlier this year.

Also, in the line-up was reigning joint International Bashment Soca King SK. Though it was difficult to catch all of SK’s lyrics due to poor audio, his fans were still lapping up his performance. He added Tek Position and his winning track Reverse.

Though bashment was promised, it was not just restricted to soca. SK dropped his latest release, Massacre; its music video has accumulated over 20,000 views on YouTube since it was released on 12 April.

Brutal Crankstar delivered some of his edgy tracks, including the massively popular Come By Me For. SugahRhe represented for the ladies and was first out the blocks, delivering an energetic performance of Bounce It and Press My Buttons.

Faith told Bajan Vibes: “The Soca Lockdown brand is definitely growing, and it was evident with the turnout for the Bashment Soca edition. Viewers increased and people were just as engaged as episode one.

“People are super interactive in comments throwing flames, hearts, and the most recent trend of 1s. Groups of friends are joining and partying in their own unique ways. I’m very happy to see that artistes can come together to bring some joy to their fans in times like this.”

She continued: “Everyone who has been a part of it so far showed no resistance to the cause and was eager to share some positive vibes. The response has truly been amazing. I encourage everyone to stay inside, stay sanitized and stay safe as we fight COVID-19.”

Faith has promised a high calibre line-up for the Sweet Soca edition this coming Saturday. (STT)
