Surety spends night on remand at Dodds

A surety has found out the hard way the level of responsibility that comes with posting bail for an accused.

The woman will spend the night on remand at Dodds prison after she was unable to get Cleve Anderson Hoyte, of Brighton, St George before Magistrate Douglas Frederick today.

The surety had committed $15,000 on behalf of the accused for two charges – that he stole $39,750 cash between March 26 and April 19, 2016 as well as $5,000 on April 20, 2016 belonging to Prophet Fresh Fruit & Variety Limited.

He also has eight other pending criminal matters from 2014 in the system. Those offences have another surety.

However, the accused, who is reportedly in a relationship with the surety, has not attended hearings for over a year and has also filed numerous sick certificates with the courts.

“If he cares about her he will come today, or else I will have to keep her,” Magistrate Douglas Frederick informed attorney-at-law Mohia Ma’at.

Despite this Ma’at explained that while the court has had issues with the accused that has not been the case with the surety.

“I want Mr Hoyte. I have been waiting for Mr Hoyte for a long, long time. He has a history. Get Mr Hoyte here today. I will send transportation for him. I want him here.

“You signed for him on some very serious fraud matters, get him here,” the magistrate stated.

But by the end of the day’s sitting Hoyte did not show and the surety was sent to Dodds to reappear in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.
