Calston Emmanuel Sealy has pleaded guilty in the High Court to theft of $12, 645.75.

The money, which belonged to Cornelius Francis, was for purchasing a vehicle that Sealy, of Odessa McClean Road, My Lord’s Hill, St Michael had for sale on social media.

Francis, who is a retired police officer from Dominica, was informed about the sale here in Barbados through another person. Contact was made and he was informed that the vehicle was being sold for $8,500. The remainder was for shipping.

However, during that time Sealy sold the vehicle to another person in Bridgetown for $8,000. The money from Francis was credited to his account at his financial institution after that local sale.

Senior Crown Counsel Olivia Davis said when Francis’ son who was mainly dealing with the transaction tried to contact Sealy the calls went unanswered.

Cornelius Francis subsequently traveled to Barbados and reported the matter.

During investigations Sealy told police, “When I spoke to Cornelius son [Kevin Francis] pertaining to them taking too long to send the money to purchase the vehicle I told his son that I can’t wait on them. He said to me they wired the money to my account. I waited for almost a whole week and did not receive anything. I told his son I sold the vehicle. His son said to me as far as he knows the vehicle was purchased by them from me. I said that I have not received anything as yet . . .I dun with that as I already sold the vehicle.”

He also revealed that sometime after he received calls from Kevin saying the money was there and also from the credit union. He informed Kevin that he would endeavour to get a similar vehicle for them.

“He said ‘okay’ but the vehicle was for his dad. He told me he would give me two weeks to get it arranged. In between that time, I was checking on a vehicle and when I did find one his contact information, which I had in my phone I . . . misplaced it. I do not know if it was me or one of my children that delete it out of my phone,” Sealy told police adding that he was “never” contacted by the Francis’ after and “I end up using the majority of the money”.

Today, via a Supreme Court No. 2 Zoom hearing Sealy took responsibility for stealing the Francis’ money between December 12, 2017 and January 30, 2018.

The convicted man will next appear before Justice Randall Worrell on August 4.
