Wounding charge before court

Accused Darius Romain Blackett is facing an indictable charge of wounding with intent.

But the 27-year-old of Chapel Gap, St Barnabas, St Michael told the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court the incident for which he is accused occurred in “self defence”.

Blackett appeared before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant charged that on August 26 he wounded Orlando Pile with intent to maim, disfigure or disable him or to do some serious bodily harm to him.

He was not required to enter a plea in the magistrates’ court which resulted in Sergeant Robert Jones objecting to bail.

The prosecutor pointed to the seriousness of the charge and disclosed that Pile was warded at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s (QEH) Intensive Care Unit.

“There is the likelihood that the charge can be upgraded,” Jones started in his objections.

In his application Blackett said he should be granted bail “because it was self defence”.

He told the magistrate that he could report to any police station on any given day and submit to a curfew or, “anything like that”.

He added: “In the incident I was just defending myself. I ain’t intentionally wound him, it was self defence ma’am, I also got stabs.”

Blackett’s application was denied. He was remanded to HMP Dodds until September 29.
