Local credit unions celebrated International Credit Union Day (ICU) in a unique way this year, coming together in one location to heighten awareness of the movement and encourage members of the public to join a credit union of their choice.

Celebrated this year on October 15, the ICU Day event was staged at Upper Collymore Rock, St. Michael and was coordinated by the Barbados Co-operative & Credit Union League Ltd (BCCULL), the trade association for all credit unions on the island.

Employees and volunteers from Lifetime Credit Union, Bartel Credit Union, Public Transport Co-operative Credit Union, Endeavour Credit Union, United Enterprise Credit Union, Barbados Public Workers’ Co-operative Credit Union, Barbados Workers’ Union Credit Union, and UWI (Cave Hill) Credit Union all lined the sidewalks along Upper Collymore Rock for a day of giveaways including tokens, promotional items and hand sanitizers to members of the public who traversed the route.

As part of the celebrations, credit unions were also encouraged to post celebratory activities to their social media pages using the hashtags #icuday and #icuday246.

Credit Unions around the world celebrate ICU Day with fundraisers, open houses, contests, picnics, volunteering and parades all focused around one goal; to raise awareness about the tremendous work that credit unions and other financial cooperatives are doing around the world and give members the opportunity to get more engaged.

International Credit Union Day celebrates the spirit of the global credit union movement.

The day is commemorated to reflect upon the credit union movement’s history, promote its achievements, and recognise the hard work of members and their shared experiences. International Credit Union Day has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October since 1948. (PR)
