In its first year, the CARICOM Competition Commission (CCC) Regional Secondary School Essay Writing Competition 2019-2020 has picked two students from Barbados, out of the 50 entrees received, for the excellence of the essays they submitted.

These students, Jamal Moseley and Kya Knight from the Deighton Griffith Secondary School, wrote on the topic How does consumer protection law benefit me and my region?, and received their certificates on Thursday, during a brief ceremony held at their school.

The competition was an important part of the CCC’s drive to implement a competition and consumer culture in the region from the ground up.

Students were challenged to think about the importance and benefits of competition and consumer protection laws to the region.

Chairman of the CARICOM Competition Commission Justice Christopher Blackman congratulated the students for their work and praised them for the high quality of their entrees.

“I am very pleased to be part of this function to recognize the achievements of two students of this school, Jamal Moseley and Kya Knight, who were commended for the quality of their essays for the 12–15 age group.

“Across the Caribbean, other than the three prize winners in each age group, only ten students were identified for commendation, with Barbados’ two being among them,”
he said.

The Fair Trading Commission (FTC) Chairwoman Tammy Bryan praised the CCC for its unwavering efforts in engaging with young people from across the region in the best practices when it comes to consumer rights and protections.

“The Barbados Fair Trading Commission has had a long and rewarding relationship with the CCC, in the enforcement of competition law and policy.

“Today’s event is no different, and it represents the critical component of our outreach program, which ensures that consumers understand their rights when purchasing goods and services, and that companies understand consumers and other businesses when engaging in trade,” she revealed.

The FTC and CCC were both extremely pleased with the level of competition seen this year, and expressed hope that the entrants will use  their works for educational purposes in the future. (SB)
