Alicia Riley knew from the tender age of 11-years-old that she wanted to be a hairdresser. Riley said that she realized she had a passion for hairdressing after watching her mother braid her sister’s hair.

“When I was an infant, my mother used to call me her little hairdresser. It was like she saw it in me before I saw it in myself. Looking back, I think I became engrossed in the art of hairdressing from watching my mom plait my sister’s hair for school,” she said.

The 23-year-old past student of the Springer Memorial School pursued her passion for hairdressing by studying cosmetology at her alma mater before going on to receive her Caribbean Certificate of Cosmetology.

Three years ago, she decided to launch her business AJR Hair Designz to fulfil her passion to be be a hairdresser and young entrepreneur.

“I founded my business because it is my passion to enhance one’s beauty and build their confidence. I specialize in natural hair braiding for men, women and children, as well as performing hair extensions- quick weaves, braided styles like knotless, distress locs etc.).

I show appreciation to my clients by presenting specials, gifts and giveaways. I have also ensured my business is accessible on Instagram @ajrxhdesignz,” she said. Riley said one of the lessons she has learnt is the importance of time management.

“One lesson I have learnt since I started my business is that time management is important but also that I must make sure that I have full details of the type of services a client wishes to have such as size and length of the hairstyle as well as a photo of their particular style to avoid incorrect information or pricing,” she said.

The owner of Ajr Xquisite Hair Designz had some advice for young entrepreneurs which was to never give up on their dreams.

“The advice I have for young entrepreneurs is to follow your dreams and never give up. There will be some bumps along the way but keep moving forward.

Manage your time properly and never let setbacks discourage you. Take on challenges as there is nothing that you cannot do,” she said.

Riley said she was seeking to expand her brand by selling her own hair care products and forging a longer list of clientele.
