Though challenged by negative effects of COVID-19 on the economy, the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) continues to work tirelessly in delivering benefits to Barbadians.

This assurance comes from Minister of Labour and Social Partnership Relations, Colin Jordan, as he delivered brief remarks at NIS’ 54th anniversary church service, held online on Sunday.

During his address, Jordan said that despite challenges, NIS remains a model framework within the region for providing financial support for citizens.

“The National Insurance Scheme, continues to provide coverage in times of sickness, maternity, invalidity, disablement, old age, unemployment, and offers other benefits such as funeral grants, death benefits, and survivor’s grants or pensions,” he said.

“As the Minister now holding responsibility for social security, and having two weeks ago chaired a meeting of Caribbean labour ministers, where we discussed the impact of the pandemic, I am very happy to be able to state, that our National Insurance Scheme, NIS, is a model for other Caribbean territories, as it is one of the few which offers unemployment benefits.”

Noting that the NIS has already paid out $16 million to 20, 260 people for the first quarter of 2021, and $155.5 million for 2020 as massive layoffs were seen in the early stages of the pandemic, Jordan once again stressed the importance of having the NIS as a lifeline to workers.

“I appeal to employers to accept your responsibility toward your employees; continue to report your earnings and pay NIS contributions in a timely manner so that in the unfortunate event of redundancy, eligible persons are able to provide for themselves, their families, and other dependents,” he added.

Jordan also said that in support of ongoing discussions occurring at the 109th National Labour Conference in Geneva, Barbados is also in the beginning stages of having social security become a right for all Barbadians, instead of only being available to citizens who are aware of the processes.
