A group of popular entertainers, some of whom Government and big businesses regard(ed) as “influencers”, create a wicked remix of 10 songs glorifying the use of guns, revelling in heartless murder and loveless sex. In one day, YouTube views jump from 63,000 to over 130,000. There are outcries and counter outcries, left-handed apologies and downright justifications. What does all this mean?

It’s a ‘heart’ matter. Think of light and darkness; good and evil; right and wrong. Binaries. Once upon a time, Barbadian society was anchored on those binaries. Laws, policies and practices reflected a national aspiration towards Godly teachings as to ‘good/bad’, ‘right/wrong’, ‘light/darkness’.

The Lord was the people’s guide. Now, however, guided by a ‘Modern World’ touted as ‘progressive’ and ‘sophisticated’, we have left those absolutes and have chosen to free float in 50 shades of grey. The Trojan Riddim Mix is just one of those shades of grey.

There are 49 left. Will we, as a nation, castigate the one and protect the 49? Will we continue to tamper with laws, policies and practices according to the dictates of the Modern World? Dear Government, carefully consider the policies you promote and the laws that you repeal, amend and enact in response to ‘The Modern World’. We can make choices, but we can’t choose consequences.

“The Modern World has spoken”. If this ‘Modern World’ – extolled by the September 15th, 2020, Throne Speech – is now our master, then what is the furore about the immorality of the Trojan Riddim Mix? Why are we shocked at our ‘Influencers’ when, as per ‘The Modern World’, they exercise artistic licence and their ‘rights’ to express themselves, have some fun and make some money? Aren’t we – as one talk show host often asserts with pride – living in a pluralistic society?

Bajans, let’s get real. People have different mindsets and different ways of thinking. Some have ‘no feelings, jus’ dealings.’ At a national level, it is up to the Government to make plain, and facilitate, the mindset and modes of thinking that will characterise this country.

It is up to Government to decide whether it will keep Barbados anchored firmly to God’s old-fashioned values or continue to loosen the country’s anchor to attach it to the ‘progressive’, ‘sophisticated’, Modern World with all its diversity.

Centuries ago, in a national dilemma, Elijah challenged the duplicity of the Israelites: “Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal [read, ‘the Modern World’] is God, follow him.” But the people said nothing.” Hopefully, in the midst of the Trojan Riddim Mix mêlée, Bajans will find their voice, examine their heart and make a choice. As a country and as individuals, we cannot reject God’s Light and yet be appalled at the devilish darkness that ensues.

But there is hope. This unedited glimpse of the dark side of society can be a catalyst for positive societal change. Nationally and individually, the problem is one of defective ‘heartware’.

Change will come when we install the Lord as our peacemaker.
