As the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA)  joins with other government agencies to clear the streets of debris and bulk waste following the passage of Hurricane Elsa, there is an assurance that house-to-house garbage collection won’t be compromised.

SSA spokesman Carl Padmore gave the undertaking Tuesday at a press conference to update on restoration efforts at the Department of Emergency Management’s headquarters in Warrens.

On average there are five compactor trucks to service the entire country daily, he said.  The 24-hour hotline numbers 262-5326 and 262-5327 have also been activated to report fallen trees or debris blocking roads, sections of the highway, access to residents’ homes, or impeding the work of utility companies.

Padmore said: “We want you to call the hotline so that we can come, remove the debris and remove the bulky waste. It serves two purposes. One, the utility companies can carry out their work and also if we get further rainfall, the debris would not go into the drains. This project is being supported by the Ministry of Transport, Works and Water Resources, as well as our sister department, that of the National Conservation Commission.

“So, we have trucks that are working throughout Barbados to deal with that specifically, as well as to complement what we have.”

The SSA spokesman also called on homeowners with transport to assist the SSA in the removal of bulk waste, such as old stoves and fridges, by taking it to the Bagatelle Metal Dump which is opened from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Tree trimmings can be transported to the Sustainable Barbados Recycling Centre. Padmore pointed out there would be no environmental harm as the tree trimmings are mulched.
