Alleyne Rotarian’s new district governor

Past President of the Rotary Club of Barbados South Sonya Alleyne has been installed as the first Barbadian female to be elected district governor for the 7030 District of Caribbean islands.

Alleyne, an accountant honoured twice as Rotarian of the Year, was lauded by international Rotarians for her energetic contribution to service, which has included treasurer for 14 years with the Barbados Cancer Society’s breast screening programme and mentoring young women from the Commonwealth.

“DG (district governor) Sonya’s involvement at the district level has been as significant and as impactful as her involvement at the club level,” Rotarian Katrina Sam said in an appreciation of the new district governor.

Sam described Alleyne as “an incredible human being” with a passion for mentoring young people.

George Connolly, who was Director of Services in 2020-2021, was also “pinned” as the new President of the club, at its recent 14th installation ceremony, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

Marcelle Murrell received the Rotarian of the Year award.

Rotarian Rose Clarke, Brian Robinson, a past president, and President-elect for 2022-2023, Brian Lashley, received awards of excellence.

Lashley was a leader in raising funds for the club’s work. Rotaract Liann Clarke received three awards, including Rotaract of the Year. (HH)
