Senior students of the Parkinson Memorial Secondary School now have another tool to help them as they enter the job market.
The tool is a 38-page booklet titled “Hire Me” which was written by Harriett Garcia, a retiree who has over 25 years’ experience as a Human Resources Manager.

Garcia had heard that Goddard Enterprises Limited (GEL) had adopted the school and that an internship programme was included in its relationship with the school.

“I therefore thought it was a good idea to help the school-leavers by giving them copies of the book which I’d created to help job seekers and those who are re-entering the job market after being out for some time.

As a human resources manager, I felt that job seekers should be better prepared and that is why I wrote the ‘Hire Me’ booklet,” she said.
‘Hire Me’ provides information on replying to an advertised job vacancy, writing a cover letter and resume, as well as helpful interview tips and other important considerations when job hunting.

The former HR Manager presented the books to GEL’s Head Office People Coordinator, Valerie Lovell and Julia Edey, the school’s Guidance Counsellor at the company’s Haggatt Hall, St. Michael headquarters. She also donated several other books, some of which she said were suitable for teachers.

Edey thanked Garcia and explained that both sets of books were very much appreciated. She said that the school’s upper fifth form students were getting ready for the interview stage in the GEL programme, and the presentation of ‘Hire Me’ was therefore timely.

She also confirmed that they plan to give one to each of the graduating students this year and those who would be graduating in the coming years.

She said she had spoken to some of the school’s teachers who, having heard the titles of the other books, said that they would be of great interest to them and to the students.

The donation of the books to GEL by Garcia was welcomed by Lovell who said that ‘Hire Me’ would help to reinforce some of the recruitment tips which company officials passed on to students yearly and it was an easy read which students could keep handy to refresh their knowledge.

She also confirmed that they will be distributing copies to the HR managers in the company’s subsidiaries.
