Matthews first joined the St James hotel in March 2016 and previously held the position of hotel manager. According to a statement from the hotel, Matthews is no stranger to the Caribbean and that Barbados was his first ever home, having grown up on the island as a child during his father’s tenure as deputy general manager of Sandy Lane. He was also educated in the Caribbean. Prior to Sandy Lane, Matthews held senior management positions at five-star luxury hotels such as The Ritz London, Chewton Glen and Cliveden House. Matthews holds a Bachelor of Science degree with first-class honours in International Hospitality Management. Having worked closely for the past five years with outgoing general manager Randall Wilkie, Matthews will take over while Wilkie has retired after nine years of service in the top position. “I would like to thank Randy for his invaluable contribution during his tenure and bid him and his family every good wish for the future.” “As one of the most exclusively, iconic hotels in the world, it is a tremendous honour for me to be associated with Sandy Lane and its team.
