The convicted Baptiste, alias Coco, was expected to be sentenced Tuesday but the case was adjourned by Justice Randall Worrell. The Cutting Road, Haggatt Hall, St Michael resident took responsibility for the September 3, 2015 death of Melanese Eversley, 61, by pleading not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter. The general worker was walking to work on Jordan Tenantry Road, St George when she met her death. Firefighters received an anonymous call about a fire at Constant, St George but spotted another fire while on their way. As they approached they discovered the lifeless body of a woman, later identified as Eversley, in a grassy area. A post mortem found the cause of her death was a cardiac injury from a stab wound to her chest. The Crown, represented by Director of Public Prosecutions Donna Babb-Agard Q.C. has put forward a starting sentence of 20 years in prison for the convict describing his crime as “opportunistic”. Defence counsel Angella Mitchell-Gittens submitted that a starting sentence of between 10 to 15 years but the DPP said the suggested penalty was “too low”.
