Democratic Labour Party (DLP) candidate for St James Central Paul Gibson is appealing to the Government to immediately repair the roads at Bagatelle Gardens, St Thomas.

Gibson, who toured the area on Saturday with DLP President Verla De Peiza and other candidates, told Barbados Today residents are fed up with the horrible condition of the roads in the area, which only receive periodical patch work.

The candidate said that the roads at Bagatelle have not received any major works for at least two generations, and noted that frustrated residents who also pay taxes, deserve new roads and that they are allowed to gain access to natural gas pipes, which are close to the area.

He said: “I am calling on the authorities to immediately pay attention to the roads in Bagatelle Terrace. We the Democratic Labour Party are very concerned about this. Repair the roads in Bagatelle immediately. I can tell you this. Having started canvassing in this area, every other house spoke to the fact that there are road issues and potholes.

“More and more people are using this road so the little pitchy patchy approach that they are using cannot work. It has been almost 20 years since the roads have been touched and we are saying that it is actually time to pave the roads in Bagatelle. We really want this to be a matter of urgency for the good taxpayers of the Bagatelle Terrace area”.

The veteran pharmacist also shared that as his team visited homes in the area, residents raised concerns about the high gas rates and the pressure “that it is putting on the food bill, on the water bill” as the costs of operating businesses rise as well. Therefore, Gibson made the call for Government to immediately reduce the cost of petrol by at least 20 to 25 cents to give Barbadians some ease.

Gibson said: “We are using solar energy and by extension you are importing less oil. So really and truly it is time that those profits be passed on to the consumer. We know that Emera Inc is almost a 30 billion US company and we are saying like how we are taught as children: let the old people pick the low hanging fruit and the younger people take the high fruit.

“Gave Emera the wind projects to do offshore where there are high investment costs because they have the capital to do it, and allow more locals to be involved in renewable energy and make it more affordable for Barbadians.

“This is something that we are calling for going forward especially as we look at 30/30 as the year for renewable energy. The Democratic Labour Party has been the one driving renewable energy. The BLP has not had one original thought, because everything that they have done are plans that we began and they are continuing”.

Gibson’s campaign theme, Bring Back the Heart, is focused on promoting neighborliness, love, and community togetherness.

DLP President Verla De Peiza said the DLP campaign is focused on people and finding out the issues affecting residents. De Peiza said the visit to Bagatelle Terrace is to also endorse Gibson’s candidacy. She said Gibson is new to the DLP but already has been playing an active role in St James Central. (AH)
