A St Michael man has been fined $25,000 for having an illegal firearm and ammunition, 10 years after committing the offence.
The fines were imposed on Kiplyn Hallam Ifill by Justice Pamela Beckles in the No. 5 Supreme Court on Monday.
Ifill, a resident of Mapp Hill, had previously pleaded guilty to having a .32 H&R Magnum firearm and six rounds of ammunition on June 22, 2010.
For the gun, he was fined $20,000 which is payable in three months or he will have to spend four years in prison; while he had to pay $5,000 forthwith to avoid an 18-month jail term on the ammunition charge.
The facts of the matter were that police executed a search warrant at Ifill’s home, and while searching his bedroom they found the firearm in a green bag.
When asked to account for the gun, he told officers: “I aint know nothing bout that gun.”
However, he later changed his story and said a man had given him the firearm to hold.
