The Alexandra Old Scholars Association has awarded four scholarships to former students who are currently pursuing tertiary education, and four certificates to current students of the sixth form.
Today, during a ceremony at the Queen Street, Speightstown, St Peter institution, the recipients of the Gabrielle Thompson Memorial Scholarship Awards 2021 were recognized for their commitment to attaining academic excellence.
The winners of the scholarship, named after the school’s last expatriate principal, are: Kamara Rowe, Javier Husbands, Michael Walkes, and Danielle Arthur, while gift certificates were awarded to Zaria Hinds, Xaria Brigeman, Zidane Browne and Rianna Hinds.
The Alexandra Old Scholars Association, the Alexandra Old Scholars Association Toronto Chapter, the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust, and Supreme Distributors Inc and Fabian Mayers of Bajan Kitchen in Toronto, combined resources to make the scholarships and certificates a reality.
In delivering the feature address, Acting Principal Cheryl Gill, who thanked the Old Scholars Association for its unswerving dedication and commitment to the development of the institution, congratulated the recipients of the awards.
Gill told the awardees that they are on the verge of an exciting part of their life, and informed them that the awards will form an important part of their curriculum vitae.
“Value the education which you are pursuing, and as Nelson Mandela admonished, view it as a weapon of change. Keep on your path of diligent study and broaden your horizons. Explore poetry and the arts and read widely. Join in the agenda to build strong communities wherever you are, join your alumni and give back so that you can in turn help to nourish the growth of others,” Gill said.
During brief remarks, all of the scholarship winners expressed gratitude for their awards, which they have promised will be used to propel their professional and academic goals. (AH)
