No pay for some NAB workers

Some workers at the National Assistance Board (NAB) have not been paid and the matter is engaging the attention of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW).

The union’s recently appointed Deputy General Secretary Wayne Walrond told Barbados TODAY that several employees who are paid bi-monthly had not yet received their wages for the January 31 pay date.

He said the NUPW was concerned since this situation had been occurring far too frequently.

“We are extremely concerned with the repeated delays NAB workers face in getting their salaries. This is a problem every month. We had some bi-monthly people that were to be paid on Monday and in my investigations there is no clear indication when they will get paid. It seems as if we are looking at another day or two and then they have to do transfers and so forth to the other banks, and I’m very disturbed,” Walrond said.

“I’ve been inundated with calls and this is not good for the workers. They are being frustrated. They have their commitments and we are really concerned that this is happening a bit too often in terms of the delay in payment.”

Walrond said the NUPW hoped that going forward, the authorities would make arrangements to ensure the workers are paid on time.

“This is not good enough and the workers are very incensed and very distraught,” he said. (RB)
