Good afternoon … I hope all the staff at Barbados TODAY are keeping well during these COVID times. I would like to talk about something other than COVID affecting our nation… a topic that keeps raising its head but is never dealt with…..

Kite flying … and the noise pollution it creates.

I understand last year the deputy director of the environment, Lisa Senthouse, was addressing this matter and promising anti-noise legislation, but to no avail. If at all possible, can this persistent problem be addressed with a representative from the government.

Whilst I encourage our culture, and kite-flying is a part of it, the ‘bull’ should not be permitted. For those that don’t know, this is pieces of plastic finely tuned so when the wind hits it, it creates loud sounds.

This can be high pitched buzzing to sounds similar to a deep engine revving up… a bit like a small jet just before take off.

I am living with 5-10 kites flying daily and it is horrendous. As I write I have my windows and doors shut and the noise is ridiculous.

This has been going on now for over four years but the past two have gotten worse. Not only do i believe it is damaging my ears but I hate to think the effects on the young children in the area… please I beg bring about some discussion with government.

This excitement with noisy kites is not a family attraction, but in fact is grown men making, setting and leaving them tied off on fencing.

The aim is to make as much noise as possible whilst watching from a distance at best or simply left tethered for the whole day. This takes incredible patience and tenacity.

Surely we can use this talent elsewhere. Let’s get our young men better entertained and employed to benefit not only themselves but those living around them.

In my experience there are good people at a loose end and in need of direction and a law to live by.
Come on BLP … you have the people behind you, so stand up and deal with this ongoing Island-wide problem.
