A 48-year-old fisherman has been remanded to Dodds Prison on an assault charge.

When Winston McDonald Crichlow, of Lower Bridge Gap, Goodland, St Michael appeared before Magistrate Kim Butcher on Tuesday, he denied that he unlawfully assaulted Kim Downie on March 19.

But the fact that he had recently been before the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court and was granted bail on a threat charge did not go in his favour.

Police Constable Ralph Rollock put forward that fact as the major ground against bail for the accused.

The prosecutor further submitted that Crichlow’s antecedents showed that he has a propensity to commit such offences and there were fears that he would re-offend if granted bail. The need to protect the complainant and the society were also put forward as reasons why the accused should not be allowed his freedom at this time.

In his bail application the fisherman told the magistrate that he was getting ready to go out to sea this week and preparations were already being made.

“I have my house that I am fixing and it is not in no condition that I can go and leave it. I have my children to send to school and I want to keep my job . . . in the fish market,” he disclosed.

However, the charge against him was not Crichlow’s only challenge. The person who previously stood bail for him appeared in court and asked to withdraw as surety due to “his behaviour”.

The withdrawal was allowed by Magistrate Butcher and Crichlow was remanded until April 14.
