Barbados win six medals at Caribbean Games

Barbados accumulated five silver and one bronze medal when the inaugural 2022 Caribbean Games concluded yesterday in Guadeloupe with several disciplines featured.

Danielle Treasure started the medal count with an historic performance as the first person to win a medal for Barbados at the Caribbean Games when she secured the second-best podium finish of 2:22.36 minutes in the 200m backstroke on Thursday night.

It was a proud moment for Treasure, an outstanding national swimmer who has represented Barbados well at various competitions including the CARIFTA Games where she has won several medals over the years. Andrea Becali of Cuba won gold in 2:20.95 and third went to Samantha Van Vuure of Curacao in 2:28.51.

It was a good weekend of competition for Treasure as she returns home with two silver medals having claimed silver in the 400m freestyle clocking 4:26.08.

Fellow national swimmer Nkosi Dunwoody clocked 2:18.55 in his heat but was made to settle for fourth position in the men’s 200 metre medley.

The age group for these games are Under-23 and the young talented Barbadians competitors also stood out in the track and field with overseas based athletes Kyle Gale with a 46.23 seconds silver medal performance in the 400m to his name. Anthony Cox of Jamaica captured the gold in 45.48 seconds while Lenord Castillo Padilla of Cuba in 46.24 took home the bronze.

Hannah Connell also featured on the track and was fifth clocking 13.71 seconds in the women’s 100m hurdles.

Over at the triple jump, Jemuel Miller stood out as a silver medalist with a 16.28m measurement while fellow Barbadian Nathan Crawford-Wallis earned bronze with a leap of 16.11.

Meanwhile, the Barbados Under-23 netball team led by Captain Brianna Holder played admirably as they won all of their matches except for one which was against Jamaica Sunshine Girls. Coached by Denise Alleyne Barbados trounced Trinidad and Tobago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia and host Guadeloupe for the silver medal.
