With the passing of the longest reigning British Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II and the celebration of Barbados’ first year as a Republic, the 2022 Journal of the Barbados Museum & Historical Society calls for Barbadians to reflect on the nation-building activities of the past and their potential impact on the future.

Speaking at its virtual launch on Wednesday, noted UWI Lecturer and Caribbean historian Dr Henderson Carter explained that the Journal is an important vehicle in the process of building our society and we are fortunate to have this calibre of research readily available.

“The articles in this journal foster a better understanding of who we are, our history, and our heritage, and will position us to take on the challenges when they come in the future.”

Mirroring his sentiments was the Director of the Barbados Museum, Alissandra Cummins, who encouraged the audience to purchase a copy and get to know the island’s history.

In giving a comprehensive overview of the newest volume, Editor, Professor Emeritus Pedro Welch highlighted Barbados and the Slave Trade by Pat Stafford and David Eltis, Wartime Emigration, Labour and the Barbadian Work Ethic by Sharon Milagro Marshal and “Political Appeasement and the Erection of Nelson’s Statue in Bridgetown” by Geoff Ward, among others, as articles
which everyone, especially students, teachers and researchers should read.

Published in the year 1933, the Journal of the Barbados Museum & Historical Society is the oldest, continuously published journal in the English-speaking Caribbean. It aims to publish matters relating to the history and antiquities of Barbados and the wider Caribbean; and through a broad mandate, it is one the Barbados Museum, and its President, Sir Trevor Carmichael, takes seriously.

In his address to the audience, Sir Trevor noted that “The annual publication of the Journal has become a landmark in the Museum’s yearly journey and stands as a reminder of the richness and diversity of our ongoing Barbadian experience and experiment. He also thanked Editor Emeritus Professor Pedro Welch for the presentation of a very comprehensive document.

The Barbados Museum & Historical Society extends its gratitude to the contributing authors and sponsors who have helped to make this publication a success, especially this year as it is on the verge of celebrating its 90th anniversary in May 2023. (PR)
