Residents in Campaign Castle, St George are asking the Government for a smooth, paved road.
For the past several months, they have been using a track along the periphery of a cane field in their village to get in and out of the small district to avoid the pothole-ridden road.
When a Barbados TODAY team visited the area recently, chunks of the road were missing, creating large, deep potholes.
Residents said they had reported the matter to their Member of Parliament Dwight Sutherland on more than one occasion but were still waiting for relief. They questioned how much longer they would have to wait.
“I am very disgruntled by the state and conditions of the road after many promises, especially during campaign time for elections, that the road would be fixed,” said Toshelle Foster. “It is so frustrating to the point that at times visitors or family members ask us to walk down the road to avoid driving further through the community on the deteriorating road.”
Shanice Brathwaite said the state of the road was “ridiculous” and it “looks like a cart road”.
She added that it was difficult for the garbage truck to traverse.
Another resident who did not want to be identified said that the road had deteriorated over the past 20 years.
“As time passed, the road got bad and over the past two years it reached this state. We have to use the road (track) next to the cane ground as an alternative, so we just want to see the road done. It is bad on your vehicle’s suspension and it is not safe to walk on,” she said.
“This issue was brought up again during St George Speaks [in July 2022], and after that town hall meeting our representative and the Prime Minister visited the area.”
When contacted, the MP for St George South asked the residents to be patient as there were plans to have the road fixed.
Sutherland told them to listen out for his contribution to the Budget debate on Wednesday as they would hear that the work was budgeted for and would begin soon.
