Just after 5 p.m., the highly anticipated Fish Boning competition kicked off with fisher folk from around the island competing for the $1 000 cash prize. In the end, Ruth Layne who represented the Oistins Fishing Complex, came out victorious in the flying fish boning event. Layne, who has over 34 years of experience within the fishing industry, was elated. “I am elated about it; the fish was kind of soft, I actually had two soft fish [and] I had to work on them, but it come out to be okay,” she told Barbados TODAY. “This is my second time winning the competition, I won it in 2006, and then there was a second and third [position] in between the other [years], and then I did not [compete] for a long time and decided to take a shot at it again.” You Might Be Interested In Crystal Beckles-Holder, 2nd runner up in regional competition GUYANA: Body of child found after gold mine collapses Barbadians asked to help with return tickets for Haitians Meanwhile, in one of the biggest upsets, Canadian Jason Eaton, who is visiting the island for the third time, surprised everyone by winning the top prize in the Fish Cake eating contest. Speaking to the media following his win, Eaton said he saw details on the competition online and decided to give it a try. “Well I like to eat; I heard about this on Facebook and I am here, so I thought what the heck, I’d give it a try. I’ve been to the Oistins before . . .
