condolences.gov.bb/sir-lloyd. On the day of the funeral, the cortege will leave Paramount Funeral Home on Hindsbury Road at 11:15 p.m., proceed southwest to the traffic lights, turn right and head from Bank Hall through Eagle Hall, then along Black Rock main road to the Frank Worrell roundabout and continue along Highway One until it reaches Battaleys in Speightstown. Once there, weather permitting, the casket will be transferred onto the gun carriage and escorted by military troops, proceed along Queen’s Street to Orange Street to the western entrance of the church. The Cabinet of Barbados and the official mourners will then join the procession and head into the church. Five students from each of the late statesman’s alma maters – St Albans Primary, Coleridge and Parry Secondary and Harrison College – and schools within his former St Michael South constituency – Bay Primary, St Paul’s Primary and Graydon Sealy Secondary – are scheduled to attend the service. In addition, 10 students from the Barbados Community College which Sir Lloyd established will also be in the congregation. Jordan made an appeal to the Ministry of Education and to parents to have children line the streets near the church as the funeral procession passes to pay tribute to the man who was instrumental in developing the island’s education system. “We recognise that the term for students ends on Thursday and, essentially for them, Friday is the first day of vacation, but we are asking the Ministry – and I’m using this opportunity as well to appeal to parents to assist us in recognising the contribution of Sir Lloyd to education and to make the necessary facilitation that allows your children to participate, both those who are selected to attend, but also those who will be asked to line the route to the church and the last 75 metres to the place of internment in the cemetery at St James,” he said. The minister said that plans were being made to accommodate 1 700 people in and around the church and noted that satellite locations, including one at National Heroes Square, would be set up for members of the public to view the proceedings live. At the end of the service, the procession will head south along the KNR Highway, along Highway One and proceed into Folkestone Marine Park before heading into St James Cemetery. Jordan stressed, however, that there was limited space at the cemetery and accommodation would be reserved for designated persons. Although noting that Sir Lloyd was a part of the regional integration movement and invitations were being sent to heads of government and heads of state of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries, Jordan was unable to confirm as yet which dignitaries would be in attendance. The minister said a determination is to be made regarding the adjustment of public sector working hours to allow Government workers to go to the funeral. Jordan also reminded that all flags are to be flown at half-mast until the interment as a sign of respect for the late former leader. Sir Lloyd passed away on June 26 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at the age of 86. (JB)]]>
