With continued high demand for its limited edition products, leading rum producer Mount Gay Distilleries Ltd has launched a limited edition label for its popular Eclipse rum.

The newly-labelled Mount Gay Eclipse rum bottles will be available over the remainder of the Crop Over season in limited quantities of 350ml, 700ml and 1L bottles, exclusively in Barbados.

During the Sip and Paint launch at the Mount Gay Home Experience at Harrison’s Cave on Wednesday, officials said the new limited edition label was created by local artist Rudy Vuitton and inspired by his love for the Crop Over festival.

Managing Director of Mount Gay Distilleries Antoine Couvreur said the company has had a “fantastic” year so far as it celebrates its 320th anniversary by unveiling “some of its creative innovations”.

The launch of the new Crop Over Eclipse label follows on the heels of the launch of Mount Gay’s high-end rum in its Master Blender Series in early June – the 20-year-old PX Sherry Cask Expression master blend collection, the sixth and oldest so far in the master blend series.

In February, the company also launched the Black Barrel Cask Strength Rum as part of the anniversary celebrations.

“What a fantastic year that is 2023. This is fantastic because it is a great opportunity for us, Mount Gay, to unveil a lot of very creative innovation,” declared Couvreur.

Noting that the Black Barrel Cask Strength rum and the PX Sherry Cash Expression master blend collection have been “very successful”, Couvreur said he was also looking forward to a strong buzz around the new limited edition Crop Over-themed labelled Eclipse rum.

“We wanted to celebrate Eclipse, which is a century-old blend made by Mount Gay and we wanted to pay a tribute to Crop Over. Crop Over is a very important moment in the history of Barbados and we thought it would be very smart and very interesting to create something exclusive to Barbados,” said Couvreur.

The limited edition label depicts some aspects of the festival including a music truck, a crowd and revellers, as well as a Bajan bus stop.

Vuitton, a self-taught contemporary artist for the past four and a half years, is known for his bold and colourful pieces, as well as his Mount Gay XO bottle interpretations.

He said it has always been his desire to “get an actual label”.

“It has finally happened. Hopefully, it will be the first of many,” the artist declared.

“The label was directly inspired by a scene from Grand Kadooment and what you might see on that particular day – a sea of people, people in costumes, the DJ truck and onlookers,” he said.

He is one of the founders of the art group 6PM SPLASH, which creates an event platform for emerging artists to exhibit and create art before a live audience. (MM) ]]>
