Stay hydrated!
That is the message coming from Acting Director of Medical Services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Dr Chaynie Williams, who spoke to Barbados TODAY in light of recent statements by Director of the Barbados Meteorological Services Sabu Best who advised that current projected weather patterns suggest that the current warm temperatures will continue until either September or October.
Dr Williams said that while health officials have not reported any significant increase in persons presenting with heat-related illness, residents should remain on guard and stay hydrated, particularly in the midst of the highly active Crop Over season.
“Lots of fluids, moderate alcohol consumption, making sure that we are appropriately covered, and not [staying] in extreme direct sunlight for an extended period of time. The appropriate SPF factor – 30 or higher in terms of sunblock – [and] the usual things we would normally advise [with] responsible behaviour,” she said.
Recently, the World Meteorological Organisation indicated that the first week of the month was the hottest on record due to above-average sea surface temperatures.
Dr Williams said people with preconditions should be responsible.
“They should have responsible behaviour and seek medical attention when they are not feeling well, making sure they are compliant with their medication and everything in moderation,” she advised. (SB) ]]>
