Barbados’ cruise tourism recovery has attracted the attention of the industry’s leading trade association which says it sees tremendous potential for entrepreneurs to cash in on this segment of the market in the coming weeks.

Michele Paige, Chief Executive Officer of the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA), pointed out that Barbados, while still short of its pre-pandemic visitor numbers, has shown steady year-over-year growth following the pandemic.

FCCA member cruise lines are expected to sail in 529 880 cruise guests this year, marking a remarkable 21 per cent increase, compared to 2022, and a staggering 184 per cent surge over 2021 figures.

The anticipated number of cruise arrivals is just eight per cent shy of 2018 figures and it trails figures in 2019 which was a bumper year with more than 750 000 cruise guests.

“The strong public-private sector partnerships in Barbados are playing a pivotal role in the return of cruise tourism post-pandemic, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to witness these numbers which will undoubtedly translate into an improved quality of life for Barbadians.

“But now is the time for new entrants and experiences, as there are clear openings for entrepreneurs to break into the industry,” advised Paige, who said that while the sector still had a long way to go, it was “pregnant with possibilities”.

She added that cruise lines are actively seeking unique products that cater to guest desires for authentic experiences, including a deeper understanding of a destination’s history and culture.

The FCCA official indicated that cruise line executives have already expressed their eagerness to establish partnerships with local suppliers and buyers in Barbados.

“Notably, Caribbean-American cruise line executive Vina Jumpp, Associate VP of Global Hotel, Food & Beverage at Royal Caribbean, will be present to explore strategies for boosting Barbados’ economy,” she disclosed.

Paige’s comments come ahead of the highly anticipated FCCA’s Cruise Conference and Trade Show, scheduled to take place in Mazatlán, Mexico, from November 7 to 11, 2023.

The conference is expected to attract dozens of shore excursion executives and decision-makers from cruise lines, which the FCCA official said should provide a significant opportunity for Barbadian representatives to directly engage.

“This networking opportunity can lead to enhanced profitability and lasting relationships,” said Paige.

“The conference provides an unparalleled opportunity for those interested in doing business with the cruise industry. In addition to one-on-one meetings and networking with high-level cruise executives who influence port calls, onboard offerings, and destination investments, attendees gain access to workshops and insights into the industry’s intricacies.”

On average, cruise passengers visiting Barbados spend approximately US$83.12 daily, resulting in a total expenditure of $52.43 million, per 2018 data. This includes $21.9 million on shore excursions and $4.5 million on food and beverage.

That segment of the sector is also said to provide around 2 351 jobs to Barbadians, paying $25.4 million, while cruisers spent $41.7 million for lodging on the island in 2018.
