The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) continues to work diligently to improve patient care and management, Communications Specialist Shane Sealy assured on Wednesday.

During the healthcare facility’s Open Day held as part of its 59th-anniversary celebrations, Sealy said that despite the challenges at the hospital, significant headway has been made in improving patient care, including in the Accident and Emergency Department where the third phase of expansion is scheduled to be completed soon.

He said progress would continue for the rest of the year in several areas.

“In Accident and Emergency especially, we are placing a lot of focus there with the expansion and that continues. The third phase we are on, and that is on schedule to be completed by the end of November,” Sealy said.

Several departments, including radiology, patient relations, the Electrical Unit, and others, participated in Wednesday’s Open Day which was attended by several Barbadians who went from booth to booth to learn more about the QEH.

Despite complaints made by some Barbadians about the difficulties they face when seeking treatment at the hospital, Sealy stressed that much was being done to address those issues.

“Of course, we know that there are complaints that we have to manage. We always try to respond through our Patient Advice Liaison Service (PALS/Help Desk), and we are also doing that through our other departments where people can lodge their complaints, either online or through the hotline, and we will respond as we need to.

“At the end of the day, we are here to serve patients, we are here to serve the public, so we have to take on those complaints. It’s all about improving the level of healthcare here at the hospital. That is definitely a work in progress,” the communications specialist said. (SB)
