Faith Gunn is an exceptional young lady who all Barbadians can be proud of. The 15-year-old fifth form student at the Springer Memorial School is determined to win a Barbados scholarship and make her mark on history’s page.

And she is on track to do this as she is an honour roll student and is involved in a myriad of extracurricular activities. She is a member of the school’s choir, The Progressive Writers and Orators Club, Corporal in the Barbados Cadet Corps, a member of Barbados National Youth Steel Orchestra, Assistant Branch Manager of the Student-run Barbados Public Workers Co-optima Credit Union Thrift Club and a member of the Prefect Core.

Faith, who was a bit reserved throughout the interview, smiled as her mother Kemm Gunn spoke glowingly of her academic accomplishments.

“From the moment she entered first year at Springer Memorial Secondary School she has been performing exceedingly well. Her average has always been in the 80s from first form to present date. She has always had high goals for herself so much so that when she was in second form, she scored 60 per cent in two subjects and told me that no 60s or 70s will be on her report card,” she said.

Kemm Gunn said her daughter is so exceptional in her academic pursuits that she was allowed to sit her CSEC English Language in fourth form and she received a Grade 1.

“Watching how Faith approaches her studies has been very satisfying for me. Whether she likes a subject or not, she tries to do her best at it. She likes to set goals and work towards them. She likes to work independently and only asks for input when she has exhausted her thinking. She believes that every mark counts and that one mark is the difference between 99 and 100. So, if she recognizes that an error was made in their marking, she would ask the teacher in the hopes of having that mark added. I like that about her, she is a very disciplined child,” her mother said with a smile.

Kemm Gunn said one of the proudest moments for her as the mother of Faith was when her daughter decided to give her life to God and become baptized.

“From an early age she said she wanted to get baptized… What I like about Faith is that she attributes everything she does to God. Her favourite line is ‘That is God not me’ and anytime I hear her say ‘Mummy you would not believe what happened!’ I know she is about to tell me about a situation that happened where she prayed and God delivered in some way,” Kemm Gunn said.

Faith shared some words of advice for her peers, which was that they should all seek to strive for excellence and to trust God where you cannot trace him.
