The unifying power of music was evident throughout the latest edition of Calypso and Jazz, a fundraiser for Verdun and Marina House, hosted at the Frank Collymore Hall on Saturday night.

Selections from Simon Pipe’s new album Just for Today, which chronicles the journey of mental health, addiction, and recovery, were featured. One of the highlights of the evening was a touching moment when Pipe, a former participant in the rehabilitation programme, was joined on stage by his son Reggie. Supporting the weight of the guitar on his own shoulders, Simon’s son stood in front of him and skillfully played a riff, showcasing his talent and creating an emotional connection with the audience.

This segment also featured performances by vocalists Indra Rudder and Krisirie, who collaborated with Simon on several pieces. Krisirie delivered a heartfelt rendition of John King’s How Many More, all backed by an ensemble of talented musicians. The band included Juanita Clarke on drums, Kemar Yearwood on bass, Dwayne Norville on keys, and Isiah Martelly on guitar, with each musician displaying their individual skills during their feature.

Representing soca, the high-energy Mikey brought the audience to their feet with his lively set, which included Feting Family and Enjoy Meh Life. He was joined by fellow soca artist Nikita for a dynamic performance of Party Mash Up.

The evening’s entertainment was diverse, with a performance by magician Hans Grane and a powerful spoken word piece titled Skydiving by award-winning artist Akeem ‘Stoned with Cupid’ Chandler-Prescod. His vivid imagery captivated the audience as he tackled drug use.

In her welcome remarks, Allison Gotip, Director of Clinical Services at Verdun and Marina House, said “Prevention, rehabilitation, education, that is our passionate course. This concert, one of the many initiatives by Verdun and Marina House, aligns with the National Council on Substance Abuse’s Drug Awareness Month 2025 – Strengthening Prevention. It highlights our ongoing dedication to addressing mental health, substance abuse, and addiction challenges. Issues that impact not only individuals but also families, communities, and our society at large.”

Gotip added, “We stand firm in our mission to shatter stigma, foster understanding, and create pathways to healing and recovery.” She emphasised that funds raised will support vital initiatives, including programmes for youth and adolescents, rehabilitation for parents with young children, education and skills training, and social enterprises in renewable energy and eco-farming, which are aimed at creating sustainable lives for those they serve.

Gotip addressed their partnership with Mount Gay, stating, “Since 2018, this collaboration has provided a platform to promote responsible drinking and driving, aligning with our shared goal of fostering a healthier and safer Barbados and region. This partnership exemplifies how diverse sectors can unite for meaningful change.”

Pauline Tully was honoured for her contributions to the organisations’ mission and was recognised with a citation read by CEO Marietta Carrington. She was celebrated for her extraordinary service, which spans two decades of fundraising and awareness-building efforts.

Host for the evening was the dynamic Chrispen Hackett. The event concluded with a cocktail party in the foyer, where attendees were entertained with a performance by steel pannist Hashim Durant. (STT)
