The 19th staging of Agrofest opened Friday with a large turnout, with more than 300 exhibitors showcasing their products and services at Queen’s Park.

This year’s exhibition featured many first-time participants, reflecting the growing interest in agriculture, agribusiness, and food innovation. From seasoned industry players to small business owners and young agricultural enthusiasts, the event served as a dynamic platform for networking, education, and business development.

Among the first-time exhibitors was Collis Lowe, owner of Gratitude Enterprise, a company that produces fruit-infused pepper sauces.

“Every year, I wanted to participate, but something always came up,” Lowe said. “This year, with the support of the Barbados Trust Fund, I finally made it. And it’s been an incredible experience.”

Gratitude Enterprise, which was founded during the COVID-19 pandemic, has already expanded internationally.

“We’re exporting our mango and zesty tropical pepper sauces to the UK,” Lowe said.

“This event gives us a great opportunity to introduce our products to more people locally.”

Similarly, Hatch An Egg Limited made its Agrofest debut, showcasing its chicks and broiler birds to eager visitors.

“This is our first time exhibiting,” said Errol Andrews, owner of Hatch An Egg Limited.

“We started our business last year to provide small farmers in Barbados with an alternative source for chicks. Today, we’re here to showcase what we do, and the kids are having a great time seeing the birds.”

For Andrews, Agrofest was a chance to educate the public about poultry farming and connect with potential customers.

“This platform is crucial for small businesses like ours,” he explained. “It helps us raise awareness about our services and reach more farmers across the island.”

Agrofest has long been a catalyst for youth engagement in agriculture, and this year was no exception. Young livestock farmer Shavier Herbert, a student at St

Paul’s Primary, proudly represented his school with two animals, Goliath and Samson.

“Agriculture is fun because you get to teach people about it and learn at the same time,” said Herbert, who, despite his young age, already shows a deep passion for farming.

His enthusiasm is echoed by many young visitors who got hands-on experience with the livestock displays, crop exhibits, and interactive farming activities.

Another newbie was father and daughter duo Tito Clarke and Izoome Kitron-Clarke, who had an exquisite and intriguing display. Clarke, a wood artist said he was inspired by the beauty that the “Almighty Father” created, adding that he specialised in using mahogany wood. Clarke said he decided to showcase his works with the help of his daughter following two NIFCA gold awards he won in 2023.
