Senator Chad Blackman has vowed to place residents at the heart of decision-making as he launches his campaign for the St James North by-election, promising a new model of development under the Barbados Labour Party.

The 42-year-old minister for educational transformation said the constituency’s mix of coastal, rural and urban communities offers a unique chance to build a dynamic future rooted in community-driven solutions.

“In the next 90 days, you will hear the vision from the party and from me for how we ensure that every community plays a part in the future of St James North,” Blackman said during a press conference at party headquarters on Thursday night. “It’s not about titles. It’s about being present, being accessible, and putting people at the centre.”

Senator Blackman, who has been canvassing the constituency since early last year, also paid tribute to retired MP Edmund Hinkson, describing him as a steady guide and loyal servant of the people.

Speaking during the conference, Hinkson, who held the seat since 2013, said he was confident that Senator Blackman was the right person to take over.

He revealed that the two began planning the transition shortly after the 2022 election, with Senator Blackman, then serving as Barbados’ ambassador in Geneva, being quietly groomed for the role.

“Chad has my full confidence and support,” Hinkson declared.

“He told me: ‘Eddie, I will do good by the people of St James North — you have my word.’ And I said: ‘Okay, Chad. Let’s go.’”

Describing Senator Blackman as “people-centred” with both global experience and national sensibility, Hinkson dismissed opposition claims about the candidate selection process and said his replacement enjoyed full support from the constituency branch.

Hinkson said he introduced Senator Blackman to key residents across the constituency over the course of two days and was impressed by the response.

Prime Minister Mia Mottley, who led the press conference, said the party’s selection process was in full compliance with party rules and received the unanimous support of the national council.

She praised Senator Blackman’s track record of international and national service, and thanked Hinkson for his “exemplary parliamentary career”.

His resignation from both the Senate and Cabinet will be required before formally entering the hustings. (SM)
