BLP stalwart Chessel Rock remembered as pillar of party and community

Barbados Labour Party (BLP) leader, Prime Minister Mia Mottley, has paid tribute to stalwart the late Chessel Rock, whose contribution to the party spanned generations.

Mottley described Rock as a pillar of the party and noted her commitment to the BLP’s ideals and her deep connection to its grassroots membership, which she described as the true foundation of any political movement.

“…At the party level, she was a true guardian, a fierce defender of its actions and record with all the vigour she could muster, right up until her last breath.”

Rock’s political journey began during the tenure of Mottley’s father as Member of Parliament for the City of Bridgetown and remained throughout the years of Billie Miller’s (now Dame Billie) representation. Her activism extended into Christ Church West, where she worked alongside former MP Sir Henry Forde and the current representative, Dr William Duguid.

In 2021, her loyalty and dedication were recognised by the party when the BLP established the Chessel Rock Award to honour outstanding female members. Rock was also awarded the Barbados Service Medal in 1996.

Mottley offered a personal reflection on Rock, whom she likened to an aunt, recalling a special bond that dated back to her birth. “She boasted that she was the first person, outside of medical personnel, to hold me after my birth,” the Prime Minister shared. “Her relationship with me and my family has remained unblemished all these years.”

Beyond politics, Rock was remembered as a warm and caring figure, especially known for her culinary talents and community spirit.

She operated the canteen at The St Michael School for many years and was an active member of the Bethel Methodist Church.

“The St Michael School, where she operated the canteen for many years, and, of course, the BLP family, have hailed Chessel as the lady who will be remembered as much for her friendliness as for her turnovers, fish cakes and spaghetti and meat sauce,” Mottley said.

She added that although Rock was a woman without letters, except perhaps for Justice of the Peace, her contribution to the island’s political life cannot be matched by many who are known for their titles. (BT)
