Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Barbados

The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the island following intense lightning activity recorded on Tuesday morning, particularly across the northern section of the country.

The lightning, which is occurring mainly over open water, has prompted authorities to warn of potential hazards, including power outages due to strikes on electrical infrastructure. Officials also cautioned that lightning strikes can be life-threatening.

The watch will remain in effect until 6 p.m., unless conditions improve earlier, the BMS said.

According to the Met Office, unsettled conditions are expected to persist throughout the day, with cloudy to overcast skies, scattered light to moderate showers, periods of rain, and a high likelihood of scattered thunderstorms.

Residents are advised to monitor official sources, including the Department of Emergency Management (DEM), the Government Information Service (GIS), and local media outlets for updates and safety guidance.

For more detailed information and updates, the public can visit the Barbados Meteorological Services website at www.barbadosweather.org, follow their social media channels, or contact their hotline at 976-2376.
